Suggested Interview Questions and Answers
Q, How did you go blind?
On September 9, 2024, I had a headache unlike anything before. Nothing helped, so I drove myself to the VA emergency room. Before I got there, the world went away, just like one of those cartoons irising to black. It turned out to be a stroke.
Q, How did you learn Braille?
I had to develop the vocabulary first. Every field has its own vernacular, you have to learn it to look up anything. I learned enough about accessibility to ask the right questions. I found that the VA has 13 Blind Rehabilitation Centers and went to one in West Palm Beach, Florida, learning Braille and how to operate as a blind person. I started learning Braille at the Blind Rehabilitation Center in West Palm Beach VA. I Continued learning on another trip. Since then I have enrolled in The Braille Transcriber's course to certify myself and learn more about Braille.
Q, Why did you write the book?
The book started from notes I took at the BRC for my own reference. When I showed others, they wanted copies, not just on Braille but on helpful things like restroom signs and elevator buttons. This edition is the book I wish I had been given in the hospital before I came home, a practical guide to start off with.
Q, What's next?
A flashcard teaching system for adults. Children have systems for learning Braille, but if you suffer blindness later in life, there is no good system to work through. A complete teacher's manual with lesson plans, curriculum, and QR codes for downloads. Expected release, first quarter of next year.
Q, What would you tell someone newly diagnosed?
Prepare. Study now. Learn navigation, a bit of Braille, elevators by fingertip, restroom signs by feel. If it happens suddenly, it's an engineering problem. You have 5 senses, 4 left. You're not trapped. Adapt and live your life.
